Shelf Styling 101

Updated: Mar 8, 2023

Styling shelves is so fun! It is such an easy way to display things you love around your home. There are simple rules to follow when styling shelves that I want to share with you. Hopefully this will help you in your own home.

When doing a grouping of items try and stick to the rule of 3! As you can see in the picture below I have grouped the plant, swan, and book. On the top shelf it was a clock, candle, and lamp. Groups of 3 will give a more put together look.

Balance out things on your shelves. You don’t want a lot of little things or what I like to call "knick knacks." Try and balance it out. A large tray mixed with a few little things. A large basket on one end and balanced by lighter things in the middle. Pay attention to the weight of an object. Not literally but visually. When styling your shelves spread around the weight of your objects. Notice how on the middle shelf below it is visually heavy on the right side with the brown tray. Adding a larger solid object like the basket on the opposite end made it visually balanced to the eye.

Don’t be afraid to use the back of your shelves. Propping things up or even hanging things on the back of your shelves adds a lot of visual interest.

Fill your shelves with things that are special to you. Make your shelves unique by adding family photos, something great you bought on a trip, or even a collection of things you love. You want your home to be your happy place. Decor is great but making personal touches on your shelves with things that are important to you give your home a story!

Hope this helps you in your own home! Can't wait to see what you come up with!
