  • Interior Paint Colors

One of my most frequently asked questions on Instagram is “What is that paint color?” I’ve been meaning to write up this post showing all of the paint colors we have in our house for a while and I’m finally getting to it tonight. I hope it will be a helpful reference! Agreeable Gray The main color in our home that you see on most of our walls is Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams. This color was recommended to us by multiple friends when we were deciding what color we wanted our entire house painted. We really love it and I have had no regrets. I wanted a greige that would blend well with warm and cool colors and this is a winner! Pigeon by Farrow and Ball This is by far my favorite color I’ve ever used! At least for accent furniture and doors. We have the color Pigeon on our front door, back door and pantry doors. I think it makes such a statement having this subtle pop of color on some of the doors throughout our home. I also used Pigeon in Lawson’s reading nook closet as well as on his new dresser. Chelsea Gray by Benjamin Moore Another one of my favorites for accents! This is a charcoal gray and I love it so much! We have an accent wall behind our master bed painted this color as well as an armoire. *helpful tip: This color as well as Pigeon look darker on walls than they do on furniture I’ve noticed. Extra White by Sherwin Williams This is the color you see on all of our trim and shiplap throughout the house. I am often asked what color our kitchen cabinets are but they were ordered from the builder and were already white when we moved in so I don’t know the exact color but it is a very close match to extra white! Our custom vent hood is painted Extra White And I think that’s it! I love all of these colors so much but be sure to test them in your home before purchasing gallons of paint because paint colors can vary greatly in different homes. Another note is that most paint stores can mix colors from different companies. I usually have Sherwin Williams mix my Benjamin Moore and Farrow and Ball colors. They make it so easy! I hope this was helpful! Please let me know if you have any questions.

  • A Perfect Gift for Toddlers

My two-year old, Lawson, loves when he gets to eat his dinner at our dining room table in his “big boy chair” just like my husband and me. But, when it comes to play time, whether that’s building train tracks or coloring, it can be a little difficult for him to reach the table top! I was searching for a small table for him for Christmas, when Hayneedle reached out about their 12 Days of Deals and wanted to send me this adorable metal table to share with y’all! Today only, they are offering major sales on kids play products! So far I’ve been so impressed with the table and love it most of all because of how sturdy it is. Lawson is an active little boy, and I’ve already found him sitting on top of it a time or two. I love that I don’t have to worry about it tipping over! It took me less than ten minutes to assemble, and it’s super easy to wipe down! He’s already been building his train, eating snacks, and coloring on it, and every so often, I’ll walk into our office/playroom and find him just sitting at it. He really loves that it’s just his size! I paired the table with these super cute gray metal chairs and a set of three baskets to contain the toddler-explosion of crayons, train pieces, and blocks. Be sure to check out Hayneedle’s awesome Kids Sale today! I know there is something that your kid will love too, and you can’t beat these prices!

  • DIY Fireplace and Samsung Frame TV

We went from no fireplace, to this!! Keep reading so I can show you how we did it and what we used! Materials: (amounts will vary depending on how big your wall is and how big you want your fireplace wall to be) Shiplap – we used this from Home Depot, it’s affordable! 1×6 (used for bottom trim) 2×4’s (used for framing) 1×4 (used for top trim) 1×8’s (used for studs and mantel) Lattice trim (used for corner trim) Fireplace Insert (we used this one from amazon) Caulk and paint – we painted our shiplap with Sherwin Williams Extra White Tools we used – Miter saw/circular saw, level, impact driver, nail gun, drill I want to talk about the electric fireplace insert really quick before we get into the tutorial. My husband and I talked back and forth about whether we wanted an electric fireplace or not. I thought it may be cheesy… but after talking it over for a month or so we decided the pros outweighed the cons. One of the major pros is that it is completely safe around our one year old son. If we were to install a gas fireplace I would probably never have it on because of safety. Another pro for us is that we live in Houston and we love the fact that we can turn on the flame setting for ambiance without having to turn on the heat. Sometimes it is 80 degrees on Christmas in Texas so this is great for us! I was worried once we got the fireplace insert in that I would think it looked really fake and wouldn’t be happy with it. I don’t feel that way at all.. it is very realistic looking and I am so glad we went this route! Now onto the tutorial… We began by roughly taping out where we would want the tv, fireplace and mantel to sit, as well as how wide we wanted the wall to be. We used painters tape for this. We also removed base boards and quarter round from the wall. Next, we used 1×8’s cut to the width of the fireplace wall and screwed them into studs. We made sure they were centered on the wall. We lined them up all the way up the wall. (note: we predrilled every hole to make sure we didn’t split any wood) These boards now can act as studs for our frame. Next we started on the side walls. We built these on the floor and then raised them up. Because of this we didn’t make the walls reach all the way to the ceiling and planned to fill in the top at the end since it wouldn’t be supporting anything other than a couple pieces of shiplap. We used 2×4’s to build the walls. After securing both side walls into the studs we started on the main, front wall of the fireplace. You can see how we built that here. Again, your dimensions will be different, but I will add our overall dimensions at the end of this post. We left that bottom large rectangle the exact height of the fireplace insert so we could slide it in later. We then lifted the front wall into place and screwed it in to the side walls. We ended up having to shim the wall on the left a little bit to get it to be square, but knew this wouldn’t affect the overall structure of the fireplace. Once the fireplace insert arrived, we centered it and made sure it was level, then we added a 2×4 to each side to hold it in place and to screw the insert into. Then we started on the shiplap. We started at the top because we didn’t originally plan to add trim, and we didn’t want a little sliver of shiplap to end up there. But if you do plan to trim it out like we ended up doing I would suggest starting from the bottom. We worked our way down, leaving a small hole where we wanted to be able to hide our cable box and plug the tv in. Now time for the mantel, we followed a blog post pretty closely for this and I will link that here. This mantel took about 15 minutes to build and I love the way it turned out. I stained it with one light coat of Minwax White wash Pickling and then one light coat of Behr Cordovan Brown Semi Transparent (you can see more on my Instagram story highlights). We screwed 2 small 2×4’s into studs, making sure they were level and then we placed the mantel on top and nailed down into the studs. We added lattice trim to the corners and the back of the fireplace. We chose to use this because it was low profile. This was very easy to work with, and I am so glad we decided to trim it out. We used a 1×6 board to trim the bottom and a 1×4 board to trim the top of the fireplace. Some dimensions to consider: our fireplace wall is approx. 73″ wide and 13″ deep 49.5″ from floor to bottom of mantel 16.5″ from bottom of fireplace insert to floor the mantle is 8″ x 8″ we got the 45″ fireplace insert 55″ Samsung Frame TV (read below) The total project including the fireplace insert but not the Samsung tv, cost us approx $1,000. And then it was done! I can’t believe we now have a cozy fireplace, just in time for the holidays! We didn’t want to give up the functionality of having a TV in this room so we ordered the Samsung Frame tv which displays art when not in TV mode. It’s super convincing, and it’s way less of an eye sore than a normal TV. I talk all about it on my Instagram story highlights! I hope this was helpful and shows you how adding a fireplace to your home is fairly easy! **this post contains affiliate links. • Family Room Tour: New Rug from Overstock

When we first moved in to this house we decided we wanted a big couch for our family room. This is where we spend most of our time, and where Brett and I spend our evenings together after the little one goes to bed. We wanted it to be comfy but also look put together since it is one of the first rooms you see when you walk in our house. We found this huge U-shaped couch on Overstock, and fell in love! It has been our favorite thing and is perfect for relaxing. The room stayed empty with just a couch and a coffee table (also from Overstock) for over a year, and I knew that a rug would be the finishing touch but I could never decide on one. Until I spotted this beautiful rug on Overstock and knew it would be perfect! I reached out to them and they were so kind to send it over for me to review and share with y’all! We were so happy with our couch and coffee table purchases that I knew I would love the rug just as much. I love using calming colors in my home. I get bored with all neutral so I love to add pops of pastels. This rug gives you the neutral feel while still bringing in some color and I love it so much! The small gray accents tie in with our couch perfectly! I couldn’t be more pleased with the quality, the price tag and the way that it looks! As you can tell by this room, we love purchasing large home items from Overstock! We have had so much luck and love their prices. A Few More Room Details… I made the art that is framed on the wall! (You can find a tutorial on my Instagram stories.) It was easy peasy and I love the way it turned out. I kept most everything else neutral so that the rug would be the focal point (doesn’t it finish off the room so nicely?) and added a olive tree to the corner to bring some life into the space! We recently added the “faux shiplap” as an accent wall and I love the dimension it adds! I am so happy that our family room is now complete and I have Overstock to thank for it! If you want to check out this rug on their site you can click HERE! *This post is done in collaboration with Overstock

  • Fall Home Tour

Hey friends!! Fall has arrived at The Blooming Nest… at least on the inside ha! It’s still at least 90 degrees here in Houston, but we’re going to pretend it’s cooling off out there either way. I am so excited to share my Fall Home Tour with you! I’ve been slowly adding cozy, simple and affordable touches to make our home ready for the season change. After an extremely hot Texas Summer, I am definitely ready for sweaters, pumpkin bread (yes, I said bread and not “spice latte”… am I the only one that doesn’t like those? haha!) and cooler weather. I’ll share how I kept my Fall decor simple and affordable along the way! You will notice throughout the tour that I added a few little sprigs into my eucalyptus that I keep out year round. This was a super affordable way for me to add a touch of Fall without having to completely change out my vases. I don’t love storing a bunch of Fall decor so I like to find small ways to change or add to things that I already have out. I found those two wicker pumpkins at Homegoods and could not pass them up. I didn’t do a lot of fall themed decor this year, mostly just removed some of the color I had out during the Summer, like my blush pink bookends and throw pillows. Fall, to me, is full of warm neutrals so that’s what I tried to highlight! I added two cute candlesticks and a pumpkin to my favorite chippy bookshelf. I threw a blanket over the couch, added a cozy lamp and little white pumpkin and called it a day 😉 When it came to our master bedroom, all it took was adding a new throw pillow to the bed! I love this beautiful genuine leather lumbar from Loom to Linen! Doesn’t it create such a warm cozy vibe? If you want an easy, affordable way to decorate for every season, you should get a large chalkboard!! You can draw something simple or write a quote and instantly your home will feel more festive. This is one of my favorite spaces to decorate for each season change. (You can read about how I made my XL chalkboard here. Since this post my husband built me a new frame for it.) We recently added this custom vent hood and open shelving to our kitchen, and I had so much fun styling them for Fall! (You can read all about our small kitchen update here.) I added a couple pumpkins and a free art print I found here! Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope it is cooling off a little where you are! **this post contains affiliate links

  • Fall Inspiration 2018

Fall is just around the corner, although it doesn’t feel like it AT ALL here in south Texas. Wah! I’m still trying to get in the holiday spirit and I can’t wait to break out the Fall decor! Fall to me means adding warm woods, fresh greens and some pumpkins here and there! I don’t go too crazy because I like to save my energy for Christmas. I thought I would share some of my favorite things of the season and give a few tips for how to subtly incorporate Fall into your home! Nothing says cozy like some warm wooden candle sticks and how beautiful are these! I fell in love with these linen textured throw pillows, the muted Fall colors are so pretty! If you’re not into buying real pumpkins that are going to rot in a couple of weeks, these are a great option that look so real and you can use them for many seasons to come! I saw this beautiful table runner in the store today and fell in love! The texture and colors just scream warm and cozy!! Think outside the box when decorating with wreaths! Yes, they always look great hanging on a door or a large wooden window but they also make beautiful centerpieces. Lay one in the center of your table with a large vase in the middle of it for a more unique table setting. (Fall wreath) Love the texture and pop of wood on this vase! There’s nothing better than a warm Fall welcome! (Hey there Pumpkin welcome mat) Love the color and tassels on this throw pillow! These are just a few things that are inspiring me as I gather and daydream about decorating for Fall in just a couple of weeks. I can’t wait to share a Fall home tour with y’all soon! It may be simple but that’s all any of us really have time for anyway right?! **This post contains affiliate links

  • DIY kitchen vent hood and cabinet molding

Hi there! This past weekend we did an unexpected project! We began by just planning to add molding to our very plain white cabinets. We live in a builder grade home and are upgrading and customizing things as we go! We had the option of upgrading the cabinets to have molding when we purchased the home but decided we would rather do it ourselves, save some money and get the exact look we wanted. Anywho… we did the molding on the cabinets and then just kept going! One thing that always bugged me about our kitchen was the big, huge microwave. It was the first thing you saw when you walked in, and I didn’t like that. So we decided to build a custom venthood instead and buy a smaller microwave to sit on the counter by the fridge. Keep reading if you’re interested on how we took our kitchen to a whole new level in one weekend!! We started by building the molding that would go on the cabinets. We built each piece first and then attached it to the cabinets. We stacked a 1×3, then a 1×4 vertically, then a 1×2, then another 1×3 (see below)! We just nailed all of them together but Im sure you could use wood glue if you wanted to! We really like to buy the already primed wood that home depot sells, it makes the painting process so much easier and the boards are usually really straight and not warped. So we just worked our way around the tops of the cabinets. The most difficult part of this was making sure the corners matched up. It’s just a matter of measuring, I know you can figure it out! Plus small gaps can always be filled in when you caulk before you paint! After the molding was up I already loved my kitchen so much more! But my husband wanted to keep going!! I always dreamed of removing the microwave and he jumped right in! It was very easy to take down; you just unscrew the big bolts that are in the top cabinet. We still wanted to be able to vent above our stove so we bought a regular white vent hood from Home Depot. This was pretty simple to install, you just screw it up into the bottom of the cabinet and then connect the duct work and tape it really well! (sorry for the dark photos, we were working at night after the little one went to bed) Notice we removed the cabinet doors… we just couldn’t stop with the ideas at this point ha! Now time to build the vent hood cover!! We started by building the “box” for the bottom with 1×6’s. Just measure how far the hood sticks out and nail the box together. Then attach it to the cabinets with your nail gun. Next we measured and cut two 1×2’s to lay on top of the box and create the slope for the hood! Next we measured and cut the plywood for the front and sides. It doesn’t have to fit perfectly if you plan to add trim on top like we did. We just slid the front piece of plywood on top of the 1×2 slope, and it rested inside the box! Now measure and cut your triangles out of the plywood for the sides! We glued the triangles in. Almost done with the hood! We bought lattice trim from home depot and used it for the battens on the vent hood. We ended up nailing these on because thats just how we roll ha! (we are not huge fans of wood glue) BUT you can totally glue these pieces on however you want! Then your vent hood is done! Time for caulking and painting! So I always wanted open shelving in our kitchen, I just needed something to break up allllllll the white cabinets in a row! But we wanted an easy and affordable solution so we took the doors off the cabinets. I caulked and painted all the molding, vent hood cover and the insides of the two open cabinets. Then we cut some 2×12’s to fit into the cabinets for the shelves. I thought using bigger thicker wood would give a better illusion of floating shelves instead of just painting the previous cabinet shelves white. I stained them with my VERY favorite wood stain. It’s by Behr and the color is Cordovan Brown, you can find it at home depot (exterior stain). I love how this part turned out and I cant wait to style these shelves for every season!! Before After!! What do you think?? I plan to share more up close videos and details on my Instagram stories (@thebloomingnest) so follow me along over there! Thanks for stopping by!

  • Tips for Shopping at Homegoods

If you’ve been around for a little while, I’m sure you have heard me talk about something I found at Homegoods or followed along on my stories on Instagram for a Homegoods ‘shop with me’! I love taking my readers along and sharing the things I loved in the store that day! It is by far my favorite store and the place that I have the most success, but there are a few strategies I use to help me have the most luck out of my visits! I’ve been to almost every Homegoods in Houston and luckily the one that is 10 minutes from my house is a great one! But if the one closest to you doesn’t seem to ever be stocked well, it is worth the drive! This is the most helpful and most important tip! Go often! Homegoods’ restocks constantly, so they may have a whole new selection of furniture/decor even 2-3 days after you went in! People probably think I’m crazy, but I usually go at least once a week, sometimes twice. Its like a new store every time and thats why it is so fun! If you are looking for something specific, don’t give up because they may have it next week! Another perk of going often is you will get to see things before the good stuff is picked over! The very best time to go to Homegoods is a weekday morning (excluding Monday), even better if you can be there right when the doors open.. (thats usually not until 9:30 so you don’t have to be out the door too early haha!). They restock all day long, but if you get there first thing in the morning they will have new stuff out that no one has even seen yet and you will get first dibs! Weekends are crowded and picked over at Homegoods, but I know if you work 8-5 M-F, it may not be an option to go on a weekday morning. If you have to go on a Saturday, get there when they open! The good stuff goes soooo fast at Homegoods! Ive made the mistake far too many times of passing something up I really wanted/needed and going back for it a couple days later.. GONE! If it’s good, it won’t last, so one of the most important things to remember when shopping is ‘buy it now, think about it later!’ They make returns super easy, just keep your receipt. If it’s a throw pillow you love but you’re just not sure it will look right on your bed, TAKE IT HOME and try it!! It will be gone by the time you think about it. I had my eye on this and after weeks of seeing it in store, it went on clearance for $50 off! I couldn’t resist. It was meant to be! Stuff like this usually disappears so quickly at Homegoods and rarely ends up on clearance! If you go into Homegoods looking for something really specific, like a pink velvet and gold bench, you will most likely not have any luck and will leave angry thinking they never have what you need. Homegoods is a place to go often and go openminded. If you’re looking for a category of something like, vases, baskets or picture frames you will almost always find something that will work! You just may not have much success if you are only looking for a coffee table, they may not have any that day! Homegoods is full of every style imaginable when it comes to home decor so when you come across that super rustic entry way bench, or floral bedspread, it’s a good idea to ask yourself “does this fit my style?” If the answer is no, I would recommend putting it down and walking away. It would be easy to end up with 5 different items with 5 different styles in your cart if you don’t stay on track. I love so many blogger’s homes that are rustic/farmhouse or boho but I try to stick to things that I know I love and want to see in my home. Personally I love neutrals, texture and accents with pastels so thats what my eyes are scanning for as I walk down the isles. The TV stand, round gold mirror, throw pillows, coffee table tray, candle, lamp and probably more were all from Homegoods! I hope this was helpful, and apologies in advance to your husbands if you become a Homegoods addict like me 😉 Don’t forget to follow along on Instagram! I love sharing my favorites when I go on my weekly shopping trips. And did you know about TJMAXX.com!? (affiliate link) You can find lots of the same home decor sold at Homegoods on there! Happy Shopping! He’s such a good sport and goes to Homegoods with me so often, but this day he was not too excited to be stuck in a cart. 😉 nothing a few goldfish couldn’t fix!

  • Tips for Picking out the Perfect Rug

Let’s talk about rugs!! They are hands down my number one favorite piece of decor to buy! They are super important, the options are endless and they make rooms look complete! I thought I would share a few tips for picking out the right rug for your room and how to make sure you choose the right size. I’ll also add a few of my favorite rugs below! Rug Sizing Most of the time you are safer going with a bigger size when it comes to rugs. I know sometimes they can be expensive so you choose a smaller size hoping that it will work just fine, but a rug that is too small can really take away  from a room and a rug that is the right size can add sooo much! Here are a couple of things to keep in mind… When adding a rug to a living room, try to make sure all front legs of chairs and couches are on the rug, at least a few inches. Same for a bedroom, make sure your bed is overlapping the rug by a decent amount (see picture above). Here’s a quick guideline you can refer back to when shopping for a rug for your bedroom: King – 8×11 Queen – 6×9 Full or Twin – 5×8 Of course nothing is a strict rule when it comes to decor, this should help you choose a rug that is an optimal size and gives the greatest impact for your room! Rug Color When it comes to color a lot of it can be personal preference. Some may like lots of color and some may like to keep the whole room a neutral palette. Usually, if your furniture pieces have lots of color I would stick to a more neutral rug to really ground the space and vice versa, if your furniture pieces are neutrals and plain a fun colorful/printed rug may really add some flare to the space! Personally, I tend to follow the second option. I love buying furniture pieces that are neutral and traditional so I don’t get tired of them, and buy more fun rugs with some color (even if still muted) so that if i get tired of it it is easier to replace than a sofa! Most of the time you really can’t go wrong with a neutral colored rug, so if you’re the type that wants to pick a rug out once and not replace it for a long time you will probably be better off going that route! Rug Pattern This is pretty simple and follows the same guidelines as if you were to mix patterns in your clothing! If you have a sofa with a small floral pattern it would be acceptable to match it with a rug that has a wide stripe pattern or a very sporadic stripe pattern. That may be a little busy for my taste, but it is the best way I can describe it ha! The best way to mix patterns is buy using small scale and large scale ones to make sure they don’t clash or look like there is too much going on in a room. If you’re a huge fan of colorful patterns rugs, a kitchen is a great place for them because theres usually not much else going on in there! Again, if you like to play it safe and you have patterned or printed furniture, maybe opt for a solid colored rug or a classic jute!
